DLP Pricing in 2026: What Data Loss Prevention Really Costs Per User
.jpg)
Short answer: DLP pricing in 2026 runs from roughly $6 to $12 per user per month for the published tiers we could find, and most enterprise vendors do not publish at all. The license is also the smallest line in the budget. The real cost of data loss prevention is the per-channel add-ons (endpoint, cloud, email, web, AI prompts are each a SKU somewhere) and the months of regex tuning that pattern-based DLP demands before it stops crying wolf. dope.security's Dopamine DLP is priced as a single SWG + DLP package, runs in the same agent as the secure web gateway, and needs no rules written, which is where the saving actually comes from.
If you are budgeting for DLP, the per-seat number is the wrong place to start. Start with the channels you need covered and the people you have to run it. Our comparison of the best DLP tools in 2026 covers who does what; this post is about what it costs, including the parts that never appear on a quote.
Everything below is sourced from vendor pricing pages, public price catalogs and clearly labeled third-party estimates as of November 2026. Where a vendor does not publish, we say so. For how the secure web gateway side of the stack is priced, see our guide to secure web gateway pricing in 2026.
How is DLP priced?
Nearly every DLP product is priced per user per year, sometimes expressed per month. Beneath that, four pricing structures show up again and again:
- Bundled into a suite. Microsoft Purview DLP is the clearest example: you get it by buying a Microsoft 365 E5 license or an add-on suite, not by buying "DLP."
- Tiered standalone. Vendors such as Safetica publish Standard, Premium and Enterprise tiers with features gated by tier.
- Add-on to an SSE or SWG. Netskope sells DLP Standard and DLP Advanced as add-on licenses to its platform. Zscaler puts prompt DLP in its Data Protection add-on. iboss includes inline DLP only in its top Complete package. Cisco Umbrella sold DLP as an add-on to its SIG tiers, and that add-on is now part of the Umbrella end of sale dated January 31, 2027.
- Quote only. Forcepoint DLP and Symantec DLP publish no list prices. Every deal is a custom quote, and third-party estimates for both disagree with each other by a wide margin.
The structure tells you more than the number. A bundled DLP is cheap if you already own the suite and expensive if you are buying the suite to get it. An add-on DLP inherits the cost and architecture of the thing it is added to. A tiered DLP gates the features that stop real leaks behind the upper tier. Only the quote-only model hides the structure entirely, which is itself information.
Published DLP prices in 2026 (with sources)
These are the numbers we could verify against a public page or catalog. Treat each as a list price, not a quote, and confirm against the vendor's current page before you budget.
Microsoft Purview DLP
Purview DLP is included in Microsoft 365 E5, which moved from $57 to $60 per user per month on July 1, 2026. For E3 customers (at $39 per user per month), the Microsoft Purview Suite add-on is listed at about $12 per user per month, and the older E5 Compliance add-on sits in the same range. Those figures were checked against Microsoft's security pricing pages by a third party on September 1, 2026, so verify them on Microsoft's site. The practical point is that Purview DLP costs you about $144 per user per year on top of E3, or comes "free" with an E5 upgrade that costs roughly $252 per user per year more than E3. Our review of Microsoft Purview DLP in 2026 covers what you get for that and where it stops at the browser.
Safetica
Safetica publishes annual per-user tiers: Standard from $72, Premium from $96 and Enterprise from $144 per user per year. It is one of the few standalone DLP vendors with a public price list, which makes it a useful reference point for what "mid-market DLP" costs when nothing is bundled.
Netskope DLP
Netskope does not publish prices, but its documentation does publish the structure: DLP Standard (L2) and DLP Advanced (L3) are add-on licenses, with exact data match, fingerprinting, OCR and image classifiers reserved for Advanced. The full inline DLP, threat and AI bundle sits in the higher Max Advantage platform tier.
Zscaler DLP
Zscaler's inline and prompt DLP require the Data Protection add-on on top of ZIA, and AI Guard and AI Scanning are separately licensed. NPI Financial's August 2025 analysis found some Zscaler SKUs priced 35 percent or more above comparable offerings. Our review of Zscaler DLP in 2026 has the details.
Forcepoint DLP and Symantec DLP
Neither vendor publishes pricing. Third-party estimates for Forcepoint DLP cluster around $30 to $60 per user per year. Third-party estimates for Symantec DLP range from about $50 to $80 per user per year at 1,000 seats in one source to $10 to $30 per user per month per module in another, which is a tenfold disagreement. We cite both only to make the point: when the vendor will not publish, the internet will guess, and the guesses are not usable for a budget.
dope.security
dope.security publishes its packaging on its pricing page: SWG (with a free trial), SWG + DLP, SWG + CASB, and the full SSE+ suite with volume pricing. Dopamine DLP is the DLP in the SWG + DLP package. It is not an add-on tier with a feature ladder; the full classifier ships in the package.
The five costs that never appear on a DLP quote
Here is where a $10-per-user DLP becomes a $40-per-user DLP in year one. These apply to any pattern-based DLP delivered through a proxy or a separate agent, regardless of logo.
1. Rule tuning. Regex and dictionary rules match strings, not meaning. A nine-digit number is a Social Security number, a part number or a tracking ID, and the rule cannot tell. The first 90 days of a traditional DLP rollout are spent in Monitor mode watching false positives and writing exceptions, and most teams never reach Block mode on the policies that matter. That is a person's time, every week, for the life of the product.
2. Channel SKUs. Data leaves through the browser, through AI prompts, through SaaS sharing, through email, through USB and through the clipboard. In most portfolios each is a separate product: inline DLP, CASB API, endpoint DLP, email DLP, AI guardrails. Our comparison of endpoint DLP and network DLP in 2026 explains why vendors split them and why you end up buying both.
3. A second agent. Standalone DLP means another agent on the laptop beside your SWG agent and your EDR, with its own update cycle, its own CPU and its own conflicts.
4. Proxy infrastructure. If the DLP runs in a cloud proxy, you pay for the proxy's data centers inside the license, and your users pay for them again in latency. Netskope's own SLA allows 50 ms on decrypted traffic, and DLP only works on decrypted traffic.
5. Professional services. Fingerprinting, exact data match and classification taxonomies need a setup project. Vendors sell it. Budget it.
Why the price per user hides the real comparison
Two DLP products at the same per-user price can be five times apart in total cost, because the per-user price does not tell you how many rules you will write, how many channels you will have to buy twice, or whether you need a second agent. The question that predicts your real spend is not "what is the price?" It is "how does this product decide what is sensitive, and where does it make that decision?"
If the answer is "with patterns you configure, in a data center," budget for tuning, latency and add-on channels. If the answer is "by reading the content, on the device, inside the agent you already run," most of those lines go away. For the architecture behind that distinction, see our complete guide to data loss prevention.
Pattern-based DLP vs Dopamine DLP: a cost-of-ownership comparison
This compares how the two models generate cost. It is not a benchmark and not a quote.
Traditional pattern-based DLP (proxy or standalone agent)
Traditional DLP is licensed per user per year, with the strongest detection features (EDM, fingerprinting, OCR) typically gated to an upper tier or add-on. Detection relies on regex, dictionaries and fingerprints that the customer configures and maintains, so false positives are a standing operational cost. Coverage is sold per channel, so inline web, SaaS API, endpoint and AI prompts are often separate SKUs. Where inspection runs in a cloud proxy, users absorb the decryption latency on every inspected request, and the DLP stops working when the proxy's data plane does.
Dopamine DLP from dope.security
Dopamine DLP is AI-powered endpoint DLP sold in the SWG + DLP package and running inside the same dope.endpoint agent as the secure web gateway, under 100 MB of RAM. An LLM reads the document instead of matching patterns, so uploads are classified by meaning: PII, PCI, PHI and intellectual property, with no regex rules, no configuration and far fewer false positives. Text is extracted on the device and classified by an LLM with zero data retention. It blocks sensitive uploads to the web and to AI tools including ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Abacus and Copilot, runs in Block, Monitor or Off mode, and explains each detection with a plain-language Dopamine Summary. The approach is covered by US Patent 12,464,023. For data at rest, CASB Neural scans Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 for externally shared sensitive files with one-click remediation.
Line by line
- License structure: traditional DLP gates EDM, OCR and fingerprinting behind an upper tier; dope.security ships one Dopamine DLP package with no feature ladder.
- Tuning cost: traditional DLP needs an owner writing and maintaining rules; Dopamine DLP needs zero policy configuration to get value on day one.
- Channel SKUs: traditional portfolios sell web, AI prompt and endpoint inspection separately; Dopamine DLP covers file uploads and AI prompts from the endpoint in one package, and CASB Neural covers SaaS data at rest.
- Agents: standalone DLP adds a second agent; Dopamine DLP runs inside the SWG agent you already deploy.
- Infrastructure: proxy DLP bills you for data centers and adds decryption latency; Dopamine DLP inspects on the laptop with no detour.
- False positives: patterns match strings; Dopamine DLP classifies meaning, which is why it ships with no rules.
For a real example of the trade, read how an AI SaaS company replaced Cisco Umbrella and added DLP without a second agent or a tuning project.
How to budget for DLP in 2026: a short checklist
- List the channels you must cover (browser uploads, AI prompts, SaaS sharing, email, removable media) and ask each vendor which SKU covers each one.
- Ask which detection features are in the tier you are quoted, specifically exact data match, fingerprinting and OCR.
- Ask how many hours per week the vendor expects a customer of your size to spend on policy tuning, and who they expect to do it.
- Ask whether DLP requires a separate agent, and whether inspection happens on the device or in the vendor's cloud.
- Ask what happens to enforcement during a vendor data-plane outage.
- Run a two-week trial in Monitor mode and count the false positives yourself.
The bottom line on DLP pricing
The published DLP prices in 2026 sit around $6 to $12 per user per month, Purview rides on the E5 or Purview Suite price, and the enterprise standalone vendors make you ask. None of those numbers predicts your real spend. The tuning labor, the per-channel SKUs, the second agent and the proxy are what decide whether DLP costs you a line item or a headcount.
dope.security removes those lines by changing where and how the decision is made: the content is read on the device, by an AI that understands what it is looking at, inside the agent that already runs your secure web gateway. Start a free SWG trial with your corporate login and add Dopamine DLP when you are ready, or book a 20-minute demo and bring your current DLP quote. We will show you which lines disappear.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does DLP software cost per user?
Published DLP list prices in 2026 range from about $72 to $144 per user per year for standalone tiers such as Safetica's, and Microsoft Purview DLP comes with Microsoft 365 E5 at $60 per user per month or the Purview Suite add-on at about $12 per user per month on E3. Enterprise vendors such as Forcepoint, Symantec, Netskope and Zscaler do not publish prices and sell DLP as quotes, tiers or add-ons. dope.security publishes its SWG + DLP packaging on its pricing page.
Is Microsoft Purview DLP free with Microsoft 365?
Purview DLP is included with Microsoft 365 E5 and is available to E3 customers through the Microsoft Purview Suite add-on at roughly $12 per user per month, based on Microsoft's pricing pages as checked in September 2026. It is not included in E3 on its own. Purview is strong on data inside Microsoft 365 and weaker on browser uploads to third-party sites and AI tools, which is where endpoint DLP such as dope.security's Dopamine DLP fits.
Why is DLP so expensive to run?
Because pattern-based DLP needs people. Regex and dictionary rules generate false positives until someone tunes them, each data channel is often a separate SKU, standalone DLP adds a second agent, and proxy-based DLP charges for data centers and adds latency. dope.security's Dopamine DLP classifies content by meaning on the device with no rules to write, which removes the tuning labor and the second agent.
Does DLP pricing include AI prompt protection?
Usually not. Zscaler puts prompt DLP in its Data Protection add-on with AI Guard licensed separately, Netskope sells AI Guardrails within its Skylight product family with separate license terms, and Microsoft's inline prompt DLP runs through Edge for Business. dope.security includes monitoring and blocking of sensitive uploads and prompts to AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Abacus and Copilot in the SWG + DLP package.
What is the difference between endpoint DLP and cloud DLP pricing?
Endpoint DLP is priced per device or user and inspects data in motion as it leaves the laptop. Cloud DLP (CASB API) is priced per user or per connected SaaS tenant and inspects data at rest in apps such as Google Drive and OneDrive. Most vendors sell them separately. dope.security sells Dopamine DLP for data in motion and CASB Neural for data at rest, and bundles both with the SWG in its SSE+ package.
How can a mid-size company reduce DLP costs?
Buy DLP that runs inside an agent you already deploy, choose a product that classifies by meaning rather than by rules you have to maintain, cover browser uploads and AI prompts in one package rather than two SKUs, and avoid proxy-based inspection that bills for data centers. dope.security's SWG + DLP package was designed around exactly those four savings for companies of 250 to 5,000 employees.
