Varonis DLP in 2026: Strong on Data at Rest, Absent at the Paste
.jpeg)
Varonis built its name on a question most security teams could not answer: who can open this file, and who actually did? Two decades later, that question still drives the Varonis Data Security Platform, now sold as SaaS with DSPM, data classification, activity monitoring, and a module Varonis calls DLP. If you are comparing the whole category, our guide to the best data loss prevention tools ranks the field. This post goes deep on Varonis DLP, and on the one moment it was never designed to sit in: an employee pasting into a personal AI account on a laptop.
The short answer
Varonis DLP protects data where it lives: its own product page describes an agentless, API-based DLP that discovers and classifies sensitive data at rest, monitors activity, and responds to exfiltration, while its AI coverage runs through compliance APIs for sanctioned enterprise tenants and a gateway for AI systems a company builds or runs. dope.security enforces at a different point: on the device, at the moment a prompt or upload leaves, with Dopamine DLP classifying its meaning and Cloud Application Control blocking personal AI accounts while corporate ones keep working.
That is a testable claim. Paste a customer list into a personal ChatGPT account on a managed laptop, then check which tool stopped it before it was sent, and which one told you about it afterward.
What is Varonis?
Varonis is a data security company best known for data access governance on file shares and Microsoft 365. Its history explains both its strengths and where its DLP enforces.
- The platform. Varonis sells the Varonis Data Security Platform, with modules for DSPM, data discovery and classification, database activity monitoring, data-centric behavior analytics, data access governance, and DLP.
- March 2025. Varonis acquired Cyral to rebuild its database activity monitoring.
- September 2025. Varonis announced the acquisition of SlashNext, an email security company whose technology became the Interceptor product line.
- February 2026. Varonis announced the acquisition of AllTrue.ai, an AI trust, risk, and security management company.
- March 17, 2026. Varonis made Atlas, its AI security product built on that acquisition, generally available.
The business has moved to SaaS fast. In its second quarter 2026 results, Varonis reported total SaaS ARR of $726.0 million, up 52% year over year, with growth driven partly by self-hosted customers converting. According to coverage of its Q2 2026 earnings call, support for the self-hosted platform ends on December 31, 2026, so most customers are on, or moving to, the SaaS version now. Bloomberg also reported in September 2026 that Proofpoint was in talks to acquire Varonis; no deal had been announced as of this writing. If that matters to your evaluation, our review of Proofpoint DLP covers the other side.
How Varonis DLP works
Varonis DLP is data-centric. It starts with the data stores, not the endpoint.
- Agentless, API-based analysis. Varonis says its "agentless, cloud-native DLP automatically discovers and classifies sensitive data at rest, prevents exposure, monitors data activity, and stops data exfiltration," and that it "protects data where it lives with API-based analysis and monitoring."
- Coverage by data store. Varonis packages coverage for Microsoft 365 and Entra ID, Windows and NAS file systems, SaaS apps, AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, databases, and network telemetry. A lightweight private cloud collector handles on-premises sources and sends metadata to the cloud.
- Response, not inline blocking. The DLP page lists alerting on abnormal behavior, automated responses, and 24x7x365 Managed Data Detection and Response (MDDR) coverage. That is a detect-and-respond model built on activity monitoring.
- Network and browser. Varonis for Network analyzes VPN, DNS, firewall, and web proxy logs to detect exfiltration and command-and-control traffic, which is log analytics rather than an inline proxy. The Interceptor browser extension focuses on blocking phishing and malicious sites.
We did not find Varonis documentation for an endpoint DLP agent that inspects uploads or pastes in real time. If you are deciding where DLP should enforce in the first place, our breakdown of endpoint DLP vs network DLP covers the trade-offs.
What Varonis does well
Credit where it is due. Varonis is very good at the problem it was built for.
- Blast-radius visibility. Reviewers consistently praise how clearly Varonis shows who can access what, across file shares, Microsoft 365, and cloud stores. Before you roll out Microsoft 365 Copilot, that map matters.
- Behavior analytics. Data-centric behavior alerts catch unusual access patterns, like a user suddenly touching thousands of files, which is exactly how ransomware and insider theft often look.
- Automated remediation at rest. Varonis can fix overexposed permissions and sensitive data sitting in the wrong place, which shrinks the pile of data that could leak at all.
- A managed service. MDDR gives lean teams a 24x7 response capability without building one.
If your top risk is overshared data at rest, especially before an AI assistant starts reading it, Varonis is a serious option.
Where Varonis gets complicated for AI in 2026
Varonis has shipped a lot of AI security this year. The pattern is consistent: it governs AI tools the company has sanctioned or built, through APIs and gateways, rather than inspecting what employees type into personal AI accounts on their devices.
ChatGPT and Claude coverage runs through enterprise compliance APIs
Varonis's ChatGPT Enterprise coverage is built on OpenAI's Compliance API. Varonis says it will "continuously collect and enrich ChatGPT audit logs" and "scan all prompts and responses." In May 2026 Varonis added the Claude Compliance API, and in July 2026 it extended guardrails to Claude Code and Cowork that can block, modify, or alert. These are real capabilities, and they apply to the enterprise tenant. A personal ChatGPT or Claude account has no compliance API that your company controls, so it sits outside this model.
Atlas guards AI you build and run
Atlas adds AI inventory, AI security posture management, AI pen testing, runtime guardrails, and detection and response. Varonis says runtime enforcement works "through an AI Gateway that sits directly in the live request path, inspecting prompts and model responses," scoped to hosted AI platforms, custom LLMs, chatbots, MCP, and agentic frameworks. That is valuable for internal AI apps. It is a different job from stopping an employee's paste into a consumer AI site.
Shadow AI discovery is not prompt inspection
Varonis says Atlas helps organizations discover unsanctioned or shadow AI tools interacting with enterprise data. We did not find documentation of prompt-level inspection or blocking for personal AI accounts, and Varonis does not state the telemetry source for that discovery. Our guide to detecting shadow AI in desktop apps, IDEs, and CLIs explains why the browser is only part of the picture.
Customers report complexity and per-feature licensing
Reviewers on G2 and TrustRadius describe a steep learning curve and complex setup, and some note that features need additional licenses. Varonis does not publish list pricing. Treat these as directional and confirm them in your own evaluation.
Varonis vs dope.security: the head-to-head
Both products aim to keep sensitive data from leaking. They enforce at different points in its life. Here is the comparison, line by line.
- Where enforcement happens. Varonis DLP analyzes data stores through APIs and responds to abnormal activity. dope.security inspects traffic on the device, with SSL inspection and Dopamine DLP running before a prompt or upload leaves the laptop.
- Personal AI accounts. Varonis's documented ChatGPT and Claude coverage runs through enterprise compliance APIs. dope.security Cloud Application Control blocks personal ChatGPT, Claude, Google, and Microsoft 365 logins while allowing approved enterprise tenants, and for Claude the control covers both browser and desktop app usage with OS-level enforcement.
- How AI prompts are judged. Varonis scans prompts and responses from sanctioned tenants' audit logs. dope.security Dopamine DLP classifies the meaning of prompts and uploads with large language models through zero-retention OpenAI APIs, with no data retention and no training on your data.
- Policy effort. Varonis reviewers describe a steep learning curve. Dopamine DLP requires no rule configuration and runs in Block, Monitor, or Off mode, with a plain-language Dopamine Summary explaining each detection.
- Data at rest. Varonis covers file shares, NAS, Microsoft 365, SaaS, cloud, and databases in depth. dope.security CASB Neural scans OneDrive and Google Drive for publicly or externally shared files containing PII, PCI, PHI, or IP, with one-click remediation. For broad on-premises data governance, Varonis goes wider.
- Web security. Varonis analyzes network logs and adds a browser extension for phishing. dope.security is a Fly-Direct secure web gateway first, with URL filtering and anti-malware on the device and Dopamine DLP built in, in one console.
- Endpoint footprint. Varonis is agentless on the endpoint. dope.endpoint is a lightweight agent for Mac and Windows that uses under 100 MB of RAM.
Dopamine DLP is protected by US Patent 12,464,023. Read how it works in meet Dopamine DLP.
Replace Varonis, or run dope.security alongside it?
For most teams this is not either-or. Varonis and dope.security cover different moments in the same data's life.
- Keep Varonis for data at rest. If permissions cleanup, file share governance, and Copilot readiness are your core needs, Varonis is built for that.
- Add enforcement where the data leaves. Deploy dope.security on Mac and Windows, turn on Cloud Application Control for your AI tenants, and run Dopamine DLP in Monitor mode first to see what sensitive data flows into AI tools, sanctioned or not.
- Test the personal account split. Our walkthroughs on blocking personal ChatGPT while keeping the corporate account and blocking personal Claude accounts show the exact steps.
- Compare the field. Our reviews of Code42 Incydr and Digital Guardian DLP show how other data-centric tools handle AI.
Deployment is where teams feel the difference. Outreach Health secured 99% of its devices within one week and cut web access tickets by 70% in 90 days.
Questions to ask in a Varonis DLP evaluation
A proof of concept settles most of this faster than any datasheet. Bring these questions to your Varonis team, and ask every other DLP vendor on your shortlist the same ones.
- Where does a block happen? Ask which events Varonis can stop before data leaves, and which it detects and remediates after the fact.
- What covers personal AI accounts? Ask how a paste into a personal ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini account on a managed laptop is seen and stopped, and on which operating systems.
- What covers desktop AI apps and IDEs? Ask whether coverage extends beyond the tenants that have compliance APIs.
- What does the full bundle cost? Ask which modules, coverage packages, and managed services your use case needs, since Varonis does not publish list pricing.
Run the same paste test on dope.security in the same week, and compare the results side by side.
The bottom line on Varonis DLP
Put simply: Varonis tells you where sensitive data lives, who can reach it, and when someone touches it in a way that looks wrong, and its AI coverage governs the enterprise tenants and AI systems you have sanctioned. It does not document an endpoint control in the path when an employee pastes data into a personal AI account. That moment is what dope.security was built for. Explore Dopamine DLP and the Fly-Direct Secure Web Gateway, or book a 20-minute demo and we will run the personal ChatGPT paste test live.
