Unified AI Governance Architecture: One Enforcement Point for Web, Desktop, and API AI

The short answer

A unified AI governance architecture runs discovery, account control, data protection, and analytics from a single enforcement point and a single console, instead of stitching together DNS filters, browser extensions, cloud proxies, and a separate DLP product. In dope.security's design, that enforcement point is the device itself: an on-device proxy that intercepts traffic at the operating-system level, inspects it locally, and sends it direct.

One control plane means one policy, one set of logs, and no gaps between tools.

Why fragmented AI governance stacks fail

The typical enterprise AI governance stack grew by accident:

  • A DNS filter that blocks some AI domains
  • A browser extension that watches ChatGPT in Chrome
  • A cloud proxy for TLS inspection, with its own console
  • A DLP product with its own agent and regex rules
  • Provider audit logs for the enterprise tenants you pay for

Each sees a different slice. None sees everything. The DNS filter can't see accounts. The extension can't see Claude Desktop. The cloud proxy adds latency. The DLP tool doesn't understand AI request formats. And when something leaks, nobody can reconstruct the full story from five consoles.

The four layers of a unified AI governance architecture

LayerJobIn dope.security
1. InterceptionCapture AI traffic from every app on the deviceOS-level redirector sends traffic to a local proxy; covers browser and desktop apps
2. InspectionDecrypt and understand the request: URL, account, prompt, fileOn-device SSL inspection, URL categorization, tenant detection, Dopamine DLP
3. DecisionAllow, warn, or block based on user, app, account, and dataLocally cached SWG policy, Cloud Application Control, DLP Monitor or Block
4. OversightReport, investigate, and prove complianceAI Usage Analytics, Dopamine Assistant, SIEM integration

Layer 1: Intercept at the operating system, not the browser

AI doesn't live only in browser tabs. ChatGPT Desktop, Claude Desktop, IDE assistants, CLIs, and scripts all reach model providers. dope.security's endpoint components redirect eligible traffic to a local proxy on the device, so browser and native-app connections pass through the same control. Because the control runs on the endpoint, it can associate each connection with its originating process.

Layer 2: Inspect locally, then fly direct

Cloud SWGs inspect too, but in their data centers, after a detour. dope.security decrypts and inspects on the device, then sends allowed traffic directly to the AI service. That matters for AI traffic, which often uses long-lived streaming responses, large uploads, and HTTP/2. Fewer hops means less latency and jitter, and decrypted traffic doesn't traverse a shared third-party inspection plane.

Inspection includes the full URL, the account or tenant in use, and, through Dopamine DLP, the content of prompts and uploads to ChatGPT, Claude, the Anthropic API, Gemini, Perplexity, Abacus AI, Google NotebookLM, and Google Drive.

Layer 3: Decide with every signal at once

Good AI governance decisions combine context: a finance user, on a personal ChatGPT workspace, from the desktop app, uploading a board forecast. dope.security evaluates policy from a locally cached copy, so decisions happen on the device even when the network is slow or offline. Cloud Application Control approves enterprise tenants (ChatGPT workspace IDs, Claude organization IDs, plus Gemini, Copilot, GitHub, Box, Google, and Microsoft 365), and rules can match down to the URL path.

Layer 4: Oversee from one console

All four layers report into dope.console. AI Usage Analytics shows top AI apps, top users, and personal vs. enterprise usage. The Dopamine Assistant answers ad hoc questions in plain English in seconds and exports to CSV. SIEM integration streams events to your SOC. When you block an AI app from the analytics screen, the policy is live on every endpoint instantly.

Beyond the endpoint: SaaS posture

Some AI risk never touches the network from a laptop, like an AI note-taker granted calendar and mail access through OAuth. dope.security's AI-powered SSPM inventories every third-party app authorized on your Microsoft 365 tenant, with scopes, risk, and sign-ins, in the same console. Architecture trade-offs to know

Unified doesn't mean unlimited. Certificate-pinned apps must be bypassed, which hides their content (Cloud Application Control remains enforceable even then). Unmanaged devices without the agent aren't covered. And every vendor, including dope.security, should show you exactly which fields leave the device for DLP classification. Ask for the data-flow diagram.

FAQ

What is a unified AI governance architecture?

It's a design where AI discovery, access control, data protection, and reporting run through one enforcement point and one console, rather than several disconnected tools.

Why put the enforcement point on the device?

The device is the only place that sees every AI channel (browser, desktop app, IDE, script) along with user and process context, and inspecting there avoids routing traffic through a data center.

Does a unified architecture replace my SWG and DLP?

With dope.security, the SWG, Cloud Application Control, and Dopamine DLP run in one agent and one console, so for web and AI traffic, yes.
